reminisce about days when i could wear heels (before the ground was a blanket of snow and slush)

this semester has seen the highest percentage of biking commuters (students and profs) yet. learning to live without your car is an excellent way of re-connecting with the ground, with your body. the whole de-motorizing concept is very appealing to me. check out "de-motorize your soul", from geez magazine, and car free days
i became very sick yesterday. as i stood in the hot, hot shower, i started thinking about what an incredible luxury was afforded to me to be able to take a steaming shower whenever i desired to, and for as long as should wish! i cannot really fathom all the people who have a far different reality. i was so dehydrated, the water tasted so sweet, right out of the spigot...how rich and blessed we are as americans.20081204

from simone de beauvoir's "the second sex"
Precisely because the concept of femininity is artificially shaped by custom and fashion, it is imposed upon each woman from without...The woman who does not conform devalues herself sexually and hence socially, since sexual values are an integral feature of society...when one fails to adhere to an accepted code, one becomes an insurgent.20081202

sometimes i think to myself...
curse fairy talesfor putting fancy story-lines in my head, plots of modern-day chivalry and romance, true love at first sight and happy endings
for thinking it would be so easy
for me
for planting the seeds of traditional expectations
[not relevant for navigating the modern world]
for making me wistful, wishful
immobilized and disapointed
