long outfit post [unnecessary title]

so, i was going through my closet, and pulled out my beloved acid-wash jean jacket. i haven't worn it since spring, but now i feel it would suit me well for winter layering. a few shots...

a soft furry hat w/ scarf attached, inherited from my grandmother's house

an outfit from a few days ago- see the beautiful paisley detail in the skirt pattern?

apologies for the bathroom picture- its so hard to find a proper setup! just wait till i get my camera...

things accomplished today:

3.5 hour choir practice
catching up on blog reading
make paper cranes
organize closet
reminisce about days when i could wear heels (before the ground was a blanket of snow and slush)
talk to my mom
eat a vegan burger (very good)
eat wonderful oranges and grapes
do laundry
basically everything but the exam studying i should have started on. great.

sometimes when i'm feeling like this

it helps to do a little of this

...

oh the weather outside is frightful
and i have no fire
but my room is warm
and i am going to bed early
sweet dreams

this semester has seen the highest percentage of biking commuters (students and profs) yet. learning to live without your car is an excellent way of re-connecting with the ground, with your body. the whole de-motorizing concept is very appealing to me. check out "de-motorize your soul", from geez magazine, and car free days

i became very sick yesterday. as i stood in the hot, hot shower, i started thinking about what an incredible luxury was afforded to me to be able to take a steaming shower whenever i desired to, and for as long as should wish! i cannot really fathom all the people who have a far different reality. i was so dehydrated, the water tasted so sweet, right out of the spigot...how rich and blessed we are as americans.

from simone de beauvoir's "the second sex"

Precisely because the concept of femininity is artificially shaped by custom and fashion, it is imposed upon each woman from without...The woman who does not conform devalues herself sexually and hence socially, since sexual values are an integral feature of society...when one fails to adhere to an accepted code, one becomes an insurgent.

Unfortunately, not everyone can take God as a lover: she has to please men if she is to succeed in her life as a woman.

exams are coming
i am making one paper crane every day
there are exactly two weeks till i get to drive home

don't believe everything you think

do i really believe in a world where anything is possible? i don't think so.
why is that

20081201

sometimes i think to myself...

curse fairy tales
for putting fancy story-lines in my head, plots of modern-day chivalry and romance, true love at first sight and happy endings
for thinking it would be so easy
for me
for planting the seeds of traditional expectations
[not relevant for navigating the modern world]
for making me wistful, wishful
immobilized and disapointed
